Release the Tension

Understand Our Roots

There may come a point in our lives when we pause and wonder why others seem to have it easier, or why we seem to be stuck on a hamster wheel — expending energy, yet finding ourselves returning to the same patterns. This is where comparison can quietly become self-judgement. But when we cultivate right understanding through spiritual wisdom, our perspective can change. We can begin to understand our own root history: what has been seeded, what has been nourished, what has been neglected, and what we have invested in over time. What we see in others is also rarely the whole story. Even the fanciest highlight reel has shadows we cannot see. The invitation almost always, is to look inward, within ourselves instead. Where in our root system do we need nourishment? What new nourishment might help us grow a little taller, bear more fruit, or extend our roots towards others to receive what we cannot generate alone? This inquiry will bring us back to our own constitution — our body and mind specifically. Sometimes something seemingly small, such as feeling bloated, depleted or uncomfortable in our body, can affect how we move through the day. We can begin with the basics: What am I consuming? What is nourishing me? What might need to change? Our five senses offer a particularly practical place to begin. We smell fresh-baked goods and immediately want the brownie. We see stimulating content and keep scrolling. We hear music that lifts us, touch something soft, taste something pleasurable — and our bodies respond. None of this is inherently wrong. The question is whether we can notice the sensation without immediately becoming governed by it.
Our sensory system is highly attuned to the mind. A smell we dislike can produce an immediate judgement, a reactive facial expression or an impulse to cover our nose — even when the smell itself poses no real threat. The behavioural spectrum can range from silently thinking, “That’s disgusting,” to becoming intensely reactive to its presence, or, at the other extreme, suppressing or avoiding the experience altogether.
The sensation itself may take only a moment. Our reaction, however, can consume far more energy than necessary. And it often does not stop with the sensation. The mind adds a story, attaches meaning to it and changes our behaviour in response — gradually restricting the inherent carefree nature with which we might otherwise meet life.
The invitation is not to suppress the sensation or indulge it, but to experience it as it is, notice what arises, and release the charge around it. Over time, our associations with smell, taste, sight, sound and touch can become deeply entrenched. We begin to develop preferences, aversions and sensory conditions that we believe we need in order to feel safe, comfortable or at ease. But steadiness does not require a particular cocktail of sensory pleasures. It comes from learning to neither suppress nor indulge what we experience.
SMELL notice without rejecting, identifying or possessing TASTE experience without grasping, over-consuming or rejecting SIGHT see without chasing, extracting or comparing HEARING receive without avoiding, suppressing or reacting TOUCH feel without clinging, possessing or rejecting
This is where greater inner steadiness can emerge: not from controlling our senses, but from learning how to remain in Right Relationship with what they reveal. We begin to discover that we can experience sensation without being ruled by it. And in that growing freedom, we return to ourselves — rooted, present and increasingly able to meet life from within.

Release and Repeat

The Return Home practice is a multi-fold journey of consciousness. We continue learning, discovering and understanding what is ready to be released — from attachments to the many constructs through which we experience and navigate life. As we recalibrate towards Right Relationship, we gradually discover a uniquely personal way of embodying it. It may look different for each of us, depending on the conditions we encounter, the stage of our unfolding and what we are currently able to see. The invitation is to keep returning: to notice what has become constricting, release what we have outgrown, and make space for what is emerging. Over time, we may begin to recognise the whole and see it more clearly for what it is — and discover our place within it without needing to control, possess or separate ourselves from it. This is the re-rooting process: an ongoing unfolding through which we release, return, integrate and grow because life will keep revealing deeper layers of what we are ready to release.

Release What We Might Be Attached To

In a world we have shaped and built, we can also become entrapped by the very systems we create. Learning to navigate begins with turning inward — noticing the attachments, assumptions and identities that shape how we experience the world. This allows us to discern more clearly what is true in a world of shapes, forms and colours that can be deeply alluring. In pursuing beauty, comfort, certainty or control, we can lose touch with ourselves, one another and the living world, mistaking what we desire for what we need. Release invites us to loosen that grip and return to Right Relationship — receiving what nourishes, tending what is ours, and letting go of what we have outgrown.
Anger
Attachment to blame / resistance Often rooted in an underlying samskara rather than the external trigger alone. Release blame and turn inwards to what needs to be witnessed within us.
Disappointment
Attachment to an expected outcome When expectations are unmet, disappointment can reveal where we have become attached to a particular outcome. It invites us to recognise Truth and realign accordingly.
Expectations
Attachment to what should be We form expectations from how we perceive the world, then become upset when reality differs. Seek Truth to recognise what lies beyond what we already know.

Cultivate Fearlessness

Fearlessness is not the absence of fear. It is the growing capacity to remain present to life without being governed by what arises within us. We can experience uncertainty, desire, shame, loneliness, doubt or vulnerability without allowing them to define who we are or determine how we participate. There may come a point where we feel existentially alone — even when surrounded by others. Most of us deal with this sense of emptiness as something to immediately fill. Instead, we can recognise it as an invitation to turn towards the unseen: to remember, contemplate, pray, chant, learn and seek wisdom. What first feels like a void can become a place of relationship with the Divine when we are willing to enter it. Fearlessness also asks us to reconsider control. If life is unfolding according to a greater order, perhaps our work is not to control every outcome, but to discover who we are, understand our place within the Whole and recalibrate our relationship with what is happening. What is mine to receive? What is mine to cultivate? What is mine to give? What is mine to release? We may discover that we have spent much of our energy looking outward — seeking support, nourishment, recognition, certainty or fulfilment through what we can gain, transact or experience. Rooted in Right Relationship, we can trust we do not have to force our way into life. We can allow ourselves to be moved by it.
Fearlessness is not armour. It is the freedom to remain open to Truth and allow it to transform us.

Let's Regenerate

Awareness
→ I can recognise what is happening within me We become aware of our five senses and somatic signals, learning to slow down and respond before escalation takes over.
Benevolence
→ I can recognise what may be happening within others We recognise that others operate from their own level of awareness and capacity. Without judgement, self-restraint becomes less effortful.
Capacity
→ I can use my energy for what matters We are internally witnessed, allowing us to release what drains or fragments us and direct our capacity towards what matters.
